Dambatta, who said Nigeria is lagging behind the world in terms of school enrolment, noted that the falling standard of quality in the country’s education is “generally due to scarcity of qualified teachers at all levels especially in primary schools and a faulty curriculum which lays more emphasis on paper qualification over skill acquisition and self-reliance.”
He said it is “unimaginable to note that in this day and age, Nigeria, this giant of Africa, has the highest number of out-of-school children in the world. It is also scandalous to tolerate the glaring disparity between the north and the south in school attendance.
“While in my tabulation from UNESCO figures of out-of-school children quoted by the committee report, the average percentage in the South is about 10 and that of the North is about 50.
“There is a lot of blame to share by the nation for its indifference and the northern leaders for their negligence. It should be realized that if a part of a body is sick, the whole body can’t be healthy.”
