The Nigerian Senate has announced Senator Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo (Gombe North, PDP) as Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, replacing Senator Aliyu Ahmed Wadada, who recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Daily Trust reports that in line with the Senate tradition, the committee is chaired by a lawmaker from the opposition party.
A statement issued by his spokesman, Malam Farouk Yarma, said the decision, which was confirmed during the plenary, forms part of the Senate’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its oversight functions and enhance accountability in the management of public funds.
He stated that the Public Accounts Committee plays a vital role in scrutinizing government expenditures and audit reports, making its leadership crucial to ensuring transparency and fiscal discipline.
Dankwambo, a former Governor of Gombe State and former Accountant-General of the Federation, is regarded as a seasoned financial expert.
“His extensive experience in public finance, taxation, forensic accounting, and governance is expected to significantly improve the committee’s effectiveness in executing its mandate,” Yarma said.
Prior to his appointment as chairman of public account committee, Senator Dankwambo served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics.
According to Yarma, Dankwambo’s appointment is a strategic step toward strengthening accountability mechanisms within the National Assembly.
He added that Dankwambo, who has assumed leadership of the committee, has reiterated the Senate commitment to promoting transparency, and responsible governance, through its committee system, emphasizing that such adjustments are necessary to sustain public trust in democratic institutions.
