On a recent episode of Inside Sources on Channels TV, public health advocate and student, Darasimi Fadahunsi, shared her deeply personal journey and her vision for addressing healthcare inequalities in Nigeria.

Fadahunsi, who is passionate about public health reform, recounted two pivotal incidents that inspired her advocacy. Her aunt, a former Congresswoman and Minister, battled an aggressive recurrence of breast cancer but faced delays in treatment due to a nationwide healthcare workers’ strike.

“We were trying to get her treatment at the National Hospital, but the strike meant essential workers weren’t available. We were told that if we paid enough, some workers could be brought back to handle the case. It was heartbreaking because the situation was due to preventable causes,” she shared.

In stark contrast, Mr. Ishaqu, a low-income gateman employed by her family, lost two children to preventable illnesses because he couldn’t afford basic healthcare services.

“These experiences revealed the deep inequities in our healthcare system, where outcomes are often dictated by privilege and access,” Fadahunsi explained.

Fadahunsi is currently working on a transformative project aimed at “bringing health to the people.” The initiative includes mobile health clinics and partnerships with local and international organizations to deliver critical services to underserved communities.

“Healthcare should not be a privilege for the few but a right for all,” she emphasized, advocating for systemic reforms to improve access and affordability.

During the show, Fadahunsi also commented on the proposed National Youth Conference announced by the Nigerian President. While applauding the initiative, she highlighted the need to address critical issues such as insecurity, healthcare, education, and energy.

“We cannot solve the future of Nigeria without solving the problems we’re facing today,” she stated.

She elaborated on the impact of insecurity, particularly on agriculture and infrastructure development.

“Insecurity negatively affects so many industries in our country. Farmers are afraid to go to work, impacting our agricultural sector and exports. It also discourages new infrastructure development because you can’t guarantee its safety,” Fadahunsi said.

She praised the President for engaging young Nigerians through the conference and emphasized the importance of sustainability.

“Nigeria has a very youthful population. Sustainability, for me, means using resources today in a way that doesn’t jeopardize our future. Young people need a say in how resources are managed and improved for tomorrow.”

Through her advocacy and initiatives, Darasimi Fadahunsi continues to inspire hope for a healthier, more equitable society.
