Former Senate President and interim National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), David Mark, has launched a scathing critique of the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

He accused the Tinubu-led APC administration of being overly comfortable with corruption and pushing Nigeria towards a one-party dictatorship.

Speaking on Wednesday at the unveiling of the ADC as the official platform for the newly formed coalition of opposition parties, the former senate president said the alliance would work to prevent Nigeria from sliding irreversibly into authoritarianism ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to him, the coalition represents a broad and united front of opposition forces, youth movements, civil society groups, and concerned patriots determined to salvage the nation’s democracy from further decline.

“Today marks the beginning of what we believe would be a long, difficult and tedious journey. However, it is a journey that we are prepared to undertake, united in our collective belief that no price or sacrifice is too high in the service of our fatherland.”

“It is on record that within two years of the current administration coming to power, it has hijacked all democratic institutions, and sent our country on a creeping descent into total civilian dictatorship. The blatant destabilisation and infiltration of all major opposition political parties is aimed at achieving only one objective, to enhance total state capture and leave Nigerians with no alternative or options in 2027. This coalition is to prevent our country’s descent into a one-party state.

“We have never seen a government so much at home with corruption, a government that disdains accountability in all ramifications. A government more concerned with the next election rather than the survival of the ordinary Nigerians. A government so totally consumed with politicking that governance is abandoned, while the majority of our people wallow in hunger and poverty.”

Mark lamented that under the present government, political considerations have consistently trumped good governance, resulting in a nation where millions now wallow in hunger and destitution.

He further decried the state of insecurity across the country, warning that banditry and kidnappings have become daily realities, yet the federal government continues to shy away from decisive action.

“The Nigerian people deserve a government that protects them and makes them feel safe in their own homes,” he said.

He said the adoption of the ADC as the coalition’s platform was not just symbolic but strategic, positioning the party as the vanguard of Nigeria’s democratic revival.

“The ADC is not merely another electoral vehicle but a fortress and platform of our revived democracy,” he said.

Mark outlined the values guiding the coalition, saying it stands for unity over division, action over excuses, transparency over opacity, and justice over inequity. He added that the mission goes far beyond electoral contests.

“Our mission transcends any electoral calendar. It is a commitment to rebuild the guardrails of our democracy, to anchor power once again in the will of the people, and to hand to our children a nation worthy of their talents and their dreams,” he said.
