The Rector of the Polytechnic, Prof. Tayo Odumosu, described the trio as committed sons of Ogun State, who had positively supported the growth of the institution since establishment about four years ago.
According to the pioneer Rector, the state governor exhibited a high sense of commitment towards the establishment of the polytechnic, which produced its first set of 300 graduates at the convocation. Odumosu, while describing the governor as a visionary leader, said, “You have demonstrated outstanding resourcefulness, foresight, dogged determination in your effort to turn the state around despite enormous odds.”
The Rector pointed out that the governor’s contributions to the physical development of the institution in the last three years could not be over emphasized, stressing that, “the polytechnic has recorded monumental achievements in terms of physical development through the support of our amiable governor and some philanthropists.” This, he stated, included the construction of access road, electrification/street lighting, provision of 300KVA transformer and donation of two buses to enhance students’ transportation.
It also included the support given to build and renovate structures, such as the library, administrative block, technical workshop and the CISCO building, as the Rector hinted that with these additional four buildings, the polytechnic has a total of 15 buildings on the campus till date.
For the former Senator who is also the chairman of the school Development Fund, the Rector hinted that he has used all his contacts to bring development to the young school, assuring that in the very near future, the seeds sown by Durojaiye and others who had stood by the polytechnic would bear fruits for all to reap.
The governor, in his speech as a moderator to the institution, reiterated his commitment to the provision of qualitative education, youth development, poverty reduction and development of mankind in all facets of life, urging the graduands to see themselves as needed manpower for the state industrialization especially as related to economic projects such as the Free Trade Zones, Liquefied Natural Gas, Deep sea port and the Agro Cargo airport among others.
While noting that the mission of the polytechnic was to use available facilities to achieve the spread of knowledge and skills of ICT, the governor stressed the need for all to see themselves as major shareholders in the infrastructural development of the institution, saying “the Ijebu-Igbo people should continue to let their wealth materialize at the institution.
The Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, at the occasion commended Daniel for the foresight in the establishment of the polytechnic and canvassed the support of well meaning people in the state towards infrastructural development which he identified as the needed impetus to take the institution to higher heights.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman, Governing Council of the institution, Professor Ayo Ogunye said the institution continueds to record academic excellence since establishment, saying “the polytechnic is not only recognised by NBTE and JAMB, but has also received international ovation as it won the best CISCO Academic in Africa and Middle East for two consecutive years, that is 2008 and 2009.”
Shedding more light on the report of the school, Odumosu disclosed that the council and management take staff welfare as a matter of priority for quality service and high productivity. “The staff are being permitted to embark on further studies, some were upgraded while those qualified for promotion were promoted as at when due. The staff are also given freedom of association particularly with trade unions namely: ASUP, SSANIP and NASU. We hope two of our CISCO lecturers will have opportunity to go to Britain in furtherance of their programmes.” He said the National Board for Technical Education hasaccredited all the courses being offered by the institution.
A breakdown of the graduands shows that 42 were from the School of Science, 48 from the School of Engineering and 210 from the School of Business and Social Sciences. The Rector disclosed that the certificates of the graduates will be ready for collection as from Monday, as all formalities have been completed.
