As a result of the insecurity situation being suffered in some states in the North West, which had been considered as the major supplier of animals in the country, some livestock traders have revealed that they were being left to divert their patronage to some states in the North East.
A goat dealer at the Dei-Dei Livestock Market, Masudu Ibrahim, said that with the current insecurity situation in some North West states, the only source that sustained “our market currently is the supply that comes from the North East states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa, with some coming from Jigawa State that get their supply from the neighbouring Niger Republic”
Giving a breakdown of the goat rate in the market, Ibrahim said the smallest goat in the market cost about N50,000 against the previous year when it was sold at the rate of N35,000.
He further said that a medium-size goat was now sold at between 75,000 and N80,000 against N60,000 and N65,000 during the same period last year; while a big goat cost about N200,000 to N300,000 in place of N150,000 to N200,000.
He said the current crash in the price of grains in the market would automatically affect the market.
