Deforestation: Kaduna to sell 460 ‘save 80 stoves’ to locals in 23 LGAs

The Commissioner of Environment, Kasimu L. Abasco, disclosed this during an interview. The ‘save 80 stoves’, he said was introduced by a company called Developmental Association of Renewable Energy from Germany.
The essence of the initiative, according to him, was to find a way of curtailing the use of firewood, noting that only few sticks of firewood is used in the save 80 stove to cook food that can serve more than two dozen people.
He added: “Normally the three stones system of cooking by rural women causes a lot of problems to them because of the smoke emitted. We were reliably told that for a woman to cook a round of food for a day it is likely for her to have consumed two packets of cigarette but in using the ‘save 80 stove’, the emission of smoke is drastically reduced. Also the high demand for kerosene, which is not always available, will be reduced.
“It was based on this initiative that the company came and introduced the product and in the process of assembling the stoves, nine locals were trained on how to assemble the stove.”
He stated that the initiative will go a long way to reduce deforestation in the state since the use of less fire wood is required to use the stove. “We are trying to sensitise the people about the negative aspect of deforestation, so that cutting of trees are not done haphazardly,” he added.
According to him, the company price for the stove is N15, 000 but the state government has decided to subsidise the price by paying 50 percent so that the stove can be sold to the locals at N7, 500. “The stoves have been delivered and we are just waiting for the local government to be ready for collection,” he said.
