A human rights activist has expressed concerns over the delay in the confirmation of the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), saying it is bad for the country.

The refusal of President Muhammadu Buhari to drop the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu despite  his non confirmation by the senate, has resulted in the refusal of the National Assembly to screen and confirm nominees to head the various agencies and parastatals.

In a statement yesterday, Sylvester Uhaa said the delay in screening and confirming these officials especially, the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Governing Board for over two years now has not only incapacitated the Commission to deliver on its mandate.

He also criticised the continued faceoff between the presidency and the National Assembly over Magu, saying it is dangerous for the country’s survival.

 “The strength of our democracy lies in the strength and ability of our institutions to work effectively, independently and optimally,” he said.

“And this cannot happen when key institutions do not have heads or the required boards in place to function. I therefore, call on the NASS and the Executive, to quickly resolve their differences in the interest of the nation to allow this country move forward. They cannot continue to allow their personal and political interest to hold the entire nation to ransom,” he added.
