The Rector of the Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara, Professor Emmanuel Ufuophu-Biri, has threatened to arrest and prosecute any student suspected to be smoking Indian hemp or taking other hard drugs.

City & Crime reports that the rector also said that any of the suspected students would be subjected to medical examination and that if found guilty would be sanctioned in line with the institution’s laws.

Ufuophu-Biri also warned the students against unruly behaviour, indecent dressing and involvement in criminalities.

He said, “Management is not unaware of the alarming and increasing rate of young people consuming addictive substances and hard drugs.

“However, students of the polytechnic should not follow the crowd to engage in such acts that are harmful to their mental well-being and capable of ruining their academic journey.”

The spokesman of the institution, Mr Sagboje Clinton, who spoke to newsmen on behalf of the rector, added that the management would not tolerate any behaviour or action that would jeopardise the well-being and future of the students, as well as the image of the polytechnic.

He noted that some students who engaged in shameful acts of public display of eroticism had been sanctioned and would face disciplinary action under the matriculation oath to which they subscribed.
