The senior special assistant to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa on agriculture, Mr Aneke Ifemeni, has assured that Delta State will soon become Nigeria’s major producer of coconut.
Ifemeni, who made this known while speaking with journalists in Asaba, the state capital, also assured farmers that coconut business had come to stay in Delta.
He said Delta had everything required to take over as number one coconut-producing state in Nigeria in few years to come.
Ifemeni, who is also the state programme coordinator of the Delta State Coconut Development Programme (DESCODEP), thanked the governor for creating the enabling environment for coconut business to thrive.
He appealed to the people of the state, especially farmers, to embrace the coconut development initiative of the government by planting coconut this farming season.
“We should have it at the back of our minds that another planting season has come and one crop that must be planted by everyone is coconut.
“It is becoming a global commodity and systematically taking over from palm oil,” he said. (NAN)
