As Nigerians across the country commemorate Democracy Day on Thursday, June 12, 2025, Hon. Engr. Muhammad Buba Jajere has joined millions in celebrating the resilience of the Nigerian people and the enduring strength of democratic governance.

In a message to his constituents, he emphasized the importance of unity, justice, peace, and inclusive governance as cornerstones of Nigeria’s progress.

“Today, we celebrate the power of the people and the enduring strength of our democratic ideals,” Hon. Jajere declared. “As we mark this Democracy Day, let us renew our commitment to justice, unity, peace, and inclusive governance. Together, may we continue to build a Nigeria that works for everyone.”

Democracy Day, observed annually on June 12, marks the anniversary of the historic 1993 presidential election, which is widely regarded as the freest and fairest election in Nigeria’s history. Though the results of that election were annulled, it remains a powerful symbol of the people’s resolve to determine their destiny through the ballot box. Hon. Jajere paid glowing tribute to the democratic heroes of that era—those who fought, advocated, and even paid the ultimate price for civil liberties, justice, and political emancipation.

In his reflection, Hon. Jajere noted that Nigeria’s democratic journey has not been without challenges. From periods of military rule to struggles for electoral reform and citizen participation, the path has been turbulent yet transformative. “Our democracy is not perfect, but it is ours to protect, strengthen, and advance,” he said.

“It represents the hopes and aspirations of over 200 million Nigerians who believe in a just, free, and prosperous nation.”

He emphasized that the significance of June 12 goes beyond ceremonial remembrance. Rather, it should inspire elected leaders, policymakers, and all Nigerians to recommit to the principles of good governance, accountability, social justice, and the rule of law.

“As elected officials and custodians of public trust, we must lead by example. We must create an environment where every Nigerian feels seen, heard, and included—regardless of ethnicity, religion, region, gender, or political affiliation,” Hon. Jajere stated. “Inclusive governance is not just an ideal; it is a necessity for sustainable national development.”

The legislator further called for sustained efforts in strengthening democratic institutions such as the judiciary, legislature, and electoral bodies, noting that a vibrant democracy must rest on strong institutions that act independently, transparently, and in the best interest of the people.

He urged his constituents to remain hopeful and united in the face of economic challenges, insecurity, and political division. “No matter how daunting our challenges may seem, the Nigerian spirit is resilient. Let us not lose sight of the progress we have made and the future we can still shape together,” he said.

In addition to his call for inclusive leadership, Hon. Jajere encouraged youths participation in governance and national discourse, stressing that the energy, innovation, and courage of Nigeria’s younger generation are critical to the evolution of the country’s democratic system.

“Our youths must not be spectators. They must be involved in civic life, policy advocacy, electoral processes, and leadership development. The future of Nigeria depends on how we empower and engage them today,” he noted.

He also urged the media to continue to play its constitutional role as the watchdog of democracy. “The press must remain free, factual, and fearless. Democracy cannot flourish in an atmosphere of misinformation or suppression,” he added.

As Democracy Day celebrations unfold across the nation, Hon. Jajere reiterated his firm belief in the potential of a united Nigeria and encouraged citizens to keep faith in democratic processes. “Let us use this day not only to celebrate but to reflect. Let us renew our patriotism and our dedication to building a nation where everyone, regardless of background, has the opportunity to thrive.”

He concluded his message with a note of optimism, stating, “This Democracy Day, I reaffirm my unwavering commitment to the ideals that bind us together as a people. May our democracy continue to deepen, may our unity never waver, and may our governance always reflect the will of the people.”
