Former Governor of Osun State, Adebisi Akande has predicted an unfortunate end to democracy in Nigeria, following developments in the ongoing Osun State gubernatorial election.

The former Governor who spoke with Daily Trust in Ila, Ila-Orangun Local Government during the election, said there were so many illegalities going on.

“I’m not happy with INEC. I understand that most NYSC adhoc staff who were trained and paid came to discover that other people have taken their jobs.

“We are voting today, every where in Osun is militarized. And even right away, the security is mobilizing for more and more police from neighboring states to Osun. What does that suggests?

“To me, it suggests that they are likely going to announce a result that is different from the will of the people.

“For these reasons, I don’t seem to have confidence in INEC. This is likely going to be the beginning to the end of democracy in Nigeria.”

APC abductions

The former All Progressive Congress (APC) Chairman said the Federal government have been trying to muscle oppositions in the State by indiscriminately abducting APC leaders.

“Fourteen kilometers from me here, we have an 80year old leader, a lawyer who has been in politics for a long time, who was picked along with about fifty others overnight.”

He said they were told they were being taken to Ede but the old man was dumped along the way while others were taken to unknown destinations.

While saying those actions were exhibition of irresponsibility by the federal government, he stressed that: “Democracy is coming to an end in Nigeria”.

Akande recounted what led to the collapse of previous democratic dispensations and concluded that the present dispensation has reached the point of collapse.

“The result will be acceptable if it is transparent. When we vote and the vote is being counted, if its the real result, we will accept but if not, we won’t.”
