The Federation of Informal Workers’ Organizations of Nigeria (FIWON) and the Nigeria Automobile Technicians’ Association (NATA) have said that over 300 mechanics in Lagos have lost their jobs due to  the recent demolition of two mechanic villages by the state government.

The unions claimed that the mechanic villages located in Coker Mechanic Village, Alaba and the Surulere Mechanic Village, were demolished on  Nov. 29, 2016 and Dec. 27, 2016 respectively. 

Speaking on behalf of the two unions, General Secretary of FIWON, Comrade Gbenga Komolafe, said in Lagos at the weekend, that the development had caused untold hardship to the affected mechanics in the state.

“While we have tried all legitimate means through petitions to get redress over this injustice, we are yet to get any meaningful action from the authorities. But we have also discovered that the demolition action was an initiative of a few highly placed individuals within the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Transport without any express official authorisation,” he alleged.
