Nigeria’s Super Falconets suffered a rare 2-1 loss to the Young Scorchers of Malawi, but qualified for the Under-20 women’s World Cup with a 3-2 aggregate win.

The Falconets rode on their first leg win to reach the tournament taking place in Poland later in the year, with Oscar Precious’ solitary goal from the bench proving the difference at the Bingu National Stadium, Lilongwe.

The hosts had leveled the tie through Faith Chimzimu’s brace, with one goal in each half.

Both goals came from defensive lapses as the home crowd spurred their ladies on, while the Falconets’ defence could not rise to the occasion, losing balls in dangerous positions that led to goals on nine minutes, and 55 minutes.

Moses Aduku’s ladies were also wasteful in front of goal in each half, and were also denied by the woodwork.

They, however, continued to pile forward in attack, leading to substitute Precious providing a composed finish after disposing the Malawian defender of the ball.

Despite suffering the only defeat in the qualifying rounds, Nigeria continues her tradition of qualifying for every edition of the U-20 women’s World Cup since its inception in 2002. The Falconets will make their 12th appearance in the Mundial to be hosted by Poland from September 5 – 27.
