Youths in the Ikorodu Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State have decried the standard of living in the area, describing it as “frustrating.” They said that the area was yet to witness any significant development since it was created over 10 years ago.
The youths also berated the leadership of the LCDA for its alleged failure to provide drinkable water, town hall and good roads outside the ones being handled by the state government.
Convener of Ikorodu North Youth Alliance, Mr. Adekunle Tijani, told Eko Trust that the impact of the monthly allocation from the federation account through the Lagos State government and the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) in the LCDA that hosts the Ikorodu Industrial Estate, was yet to be felt.
According to Tijani, the Ikorodu LCDA had not witnessed the desired development because “many of those that have led the area council lack leadership and managerial skills.”
He noted that the council area leadership had failed to sink one effective borehole despite the fact that drinkable water was scarce in the LCDA.
 “A good example is the Zumratul Islamiya Primary School Borehole Project in Odogunyan. This project has not worked for a day whereas, the council management claimed it has been completed and working effectively. In this same school, pupils and their teachers are threatened by flood and erosion every rainy season; nothing has been done to check flooding of the school,” he said.
He added: “Pupils of the Local Government Primary School, Isiu, sit under dilapidated structures to learn. Those at the Federal Low-Cost Housing Estate Primary School sit on bare floor. The case of Erikorodo Army Children Primary School, Losi-Oba and other primary schools within the LCDA are not in any way different.”
Another concerned youth, Fijabi Olayemi, also condemned the non-renovation of Araromi Community Hall at Olorunda Ward since 2010, alleging that the contract for the renovation of the hall had been awarded twice by the council.
“Virtually all of the past Chairmen of the LCDA had failed the residents of this area council. The worst is, despite their failure, they don’t feel any remorse because they were anointed political sons ‘imposed’ on the people by their political leaders residing in the area,” Olayemi declared.
Efforts made by our correspondent to speak with key officials of the council on the allegations made by the youths were futile as the officials were not around when our reporter visited.
