In an effort to boost maternal health, Women for Health (W4H), a Department for International Development (DFID) funded project, has donated a female student’s hostel, class rooms and a practical room to School of Basic Midwifery, Dambatta.
Speaking when she paid an assessment tour to the school, DFID Senior Health Advisor, Dr. Ruth Lawson, said the gesture was strategically aimed at building the capacity of female students studying midwifery in northern part of the country.
Dr. Lawson also expressed satisfaction and commended the school management and W4H for their commitment to the projects.
 “The School for Basic Midwifery, Dambatta is doing greatly and improving as a health training institution in the area of infrastructure and the quality of education.
“The tutors are also trained which in turn improves the students’ performance through extra coaching for the students which made them to do greatly in exams conducted recently,” Dr. Lawson said.
She also appealed to the state government on the sustainability of the project.
She said: “We expect the Nigerian government and the state government to take over and do its part. The school itself should also work hard and improve the system to become sustainable without external support in the long term.”
The state Team Leader of W4H, Balarabe Ibrahim Gaya added that in addition to the infrastructure at Dambatta, W4H also built midwife accommodation in seven Primary Health Centres (PHC’s) in rural areas across the state to support the state in producing more female health workers.
