The previous chart-topper, Johnny Depp, slides down a place but still manages a healthy pay-cheque of £30.7m. Although the two films Depp made were profitable, ‘The Tourist’ failed with the critics and was a smaller production overall than the films DiCaprio starred in. The same can’t be said about ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ which should see Depp fighting for the top spot again next time around.

Forbes base their figures on feedback from agents, lawyers, producers and industry insiders. The sums are for the period between May 2010 and May 2011.

Adam Sandler takes third spot on the list, thanks to healthy returns on films like ‘Grown Ups’. Next up is Will Smith, who signed on for ‘Men in Black 3’ and pocketed an estimated £22.1m to reprise the role of an alien-hunting hero.

Tom Hanks is next up, who had an up and down year; thanks to the massively disappointing ‘Larry Crowne’ on one hand, and the always bankable ‘Toy Story’ series on the other. The Pixar animation would also explain the ninth spot being held by Tim Allen, who voices Buzz Lightyear in the franchise.

Ben Stiller is another one of those actors who has a recurring character to thank for his bank balance. ‘Little Fockers’ saw the actor earn £20.9m and something of a critical bashing. Trailing Stiller by £2m is Robert Downey Jr. who will be relying on ‘Sherlock Holmes’ and ‘Iron Man’ to keep him on the list for several more years.

Rounding out the top ten are Mark Wahlberg at ninth and Tom Cruise in tenth.

Despite Oscar and box-office success with the likes of ‘The King’s Speech’ and ‘Harry Potter’, there are no Brits on the list this year.
