Leaders of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Senator Seriake Dickson on Monday night met with leaders of the Kwankwasiya Movement to resolve the crisis in the party.
Daily Trust reported how crisis ensued between Hussaini Mairiga-led NDC excos in Kano and the Kwankwasiyya camp, where the party announced substituting 12 House of Representatives and State Assembly.
Our correspondents confirmed that a delegation of the national leadership of the Kwankwasiya movement Monday night met with the national leader of the party, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson and other the leaders of the party.
The close door meeting was aimed at resolving the issues between the Kwankwasiya movement and the legacy officials of NDC in Kano State.
Sources familiar with the meeting said the party reiterated its steadfast commitment to internal democracy and transparent candidate selection processes.
The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Osa Director, confirmed that a delegation from the Kwankwasiyya movement met behind closed doors with the National Leader of the NDC, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, alongside other key party stakeholders.
According to the statement, the meeting was convened specifically to address friction between the Kwankwasiyya movement and the party’s legacy officials in Kano State.

The party noted that this intervention by the national leadership aims to promote unity, inclusion, and broader participation among members ahead of the conclusion of its internal electoral processes.
“The closed-door meeting was aimed at resolving the issues between the Kwankwasiyya movement and the legacy officials of NDC in Kano State,” the statement read, adding that Senator Dickson and the party leadership are actively mediating the process to ensure all stakeholders are carried along in party affairs.

The NDC stressed that it will not impose candidates in Kano State or any other part of the country, maintaining that its leadership remains fully committed to the principles of internal democracy. Furthermore, the ongoing consultations are intended to foster consensus and strengthen confidence among members as preparations continue for upcoming electoral contests.

The statement described the hours-long meeting as highly productive, focusing entirely on finding common ground among the aggrieved parties.

“The NDC leadership will not impose candidates in Kano State, and indeed across the nation, as the party cherishes the virtues of internal democracy,” the statement emphasized.

This development comes amid widespread speculation surrounding the outcomes of the party’s primary elections in several states.

However, the NDC strongly dismissed the authenticity of lists purportedly containing results of its primaries, clarifying that no official results have been released.

“The NDC has not released any official results of its primary elections in any state. Hence, the public and party members are urged to disregard any such list in circulation,” the statement added.

Dr Yunusa Tanko, spokesman of the Obidients Movement,who is incidentally from Kura local government area of Kano State said he believes that the matter will be resolved amicably.

He said Senator Kwankwaso is the leader of the party in the state who, he believes, will treat members of the party fairly irrespective of whether they belong to Kwankwasiyya or Obidients Movements or just party members.

Tanko said party members like him believed that Kwankwaso is committed to ensuring that the party emerges stronger and United to face the forthcoming elections.

“ I believe the matter will be resolved amicably.Senator Kwankwaso is our leader and committed to ensuring fairness to all members of the party in Kano,” said Tanko.

Kano State Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Hussaini Mairiga, also confirmed that a meeting was held between the party leadership and the Kwankwasiyya movement, but insisted that the party is not in crisis in the state.

Mairiga, who confirmed this to Daily Trust on Tuesday, also dismissed claims of internal turmoil, saying:

“Our party is peaceful in Kano, it is just some people trying to give the impression that we are in crisis. On the issue of changing candidates’ names, that one, only the national body of the party or INEC can confirm that.”

Kwankwasiyya spokesperson, Habibu Saleh Mohammed, also confirmed the meeting, explaining that it was convened to foster unity and inclusion ahead of the party’s internal electoral processes.

“Yes, the meeting held. It was to resolve issues between Kwankwasiyya and the legacy officials of the NDC in Kano. We are satisfied with the intervention of the national leadership,” Mohammed said.
