Dickson’s Foundation offers education grants to over 1000 Bayelsa Students

Over 1000 students of tertiary institutions from Bayelsa State have benefited from the education support programme initiated by the Henry Seriake Dickson Foundation, owned by the former governor of the state and Senator representing Bayelsa West Senatorial district in the National Assembly, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson.

The 2023 beneficiaries of the Scheme comprised undergraduates from Bayelsa West Senatorial District; undergraduates of Bayelsa State origin from all the universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education in the State, who are on first class or second class upper standing benefited from the scheme.

Other beneficiaries were students doing Master’s degree programmes, who got N50,000 each and PhD candidates, and 80 students from Nigerian Law from Bayelsa State received N100,000 each.

Speaking during the presentation of the education grants in Toru-Orua, Sagbama local government area of the state, the initiator, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, said his investment in education and human capacity development over the years is paying off in Bayelsa State.

He challenged the recipients to embrace education for self-development and as the best form of empowerment, because it is capable of transforming families through generations.

The former Governor promised more grants and scholarships in agriculture, technology and film-making, areas because they were at at the fore-front of development, calling on individuals and corporate organisations to support the educational programmes of the Foundation.

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, commended the innovative contributions Senator Dickson has made in educational sector in the state, urging the students to make the best use of the opportunities education offers.

Represented by the deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Oborawharievwo Ewhrudjakpo, Diri said that Bayelsa had achieved great strides in education on account of the huge investments government had made in the sector in the last 12 years, noting that the educational ranking of the state had improved significantly over the last decade.

Governor Diri, who commended the Henry Seriake Dickson Foundation for initiating the educational support grant scheme, called on the beneficiaries to use the funds judiciously for their academic pursuits, as doing otherwise would defeat the good intention of the Foundation.

He said: “Our administration places a high premium on education. That is why we maintained the structures and policies which we inherited from the previous administration in the education sector.

“The revolutionary educational policies initiated by our leader Senator Seriake Dickson changed the educational narrative of Bayelsa, and we had no better option than to run with them for the good of our state.”
