But the Old Testament prophets also foretell a second coming of Christ and it is distinguishing between these two sets of prophecies that has proven to be a “stumbling block” to the Jews who do not recognize Christ as their Messiah (1 Corinthians 1:23).
The distinction is that the first set of prophecies has Jesus coming as the “lamb of God to take a way the sins of the world” (John 1:29).
Here are a few of those:
Isaiah 50:6 – Matthew 26:67
Isaiah 53:12 – Matthew 27:38, Mark 15:27-28
Isaiah 53:5-12 – Romans 5:6-8
The second set of prophecies have Jesus coming back as the “lion from the tribe of Judah who will judge the world” (Revelation 5:5).
Notice that whenever Jesus is questioned, no one is asking him, “Are you Jesus?”
That would have been a foolish question during the time of Christ because there were a lot of Jewish boys who were named Yeshua (which in English is formed as Joshua). The name Jesus was a form of Joshua and simply meant “Yaweh, God is salvation.”
What people were concerned with asking Jesus was, “Are you the Christ?” Are you the Messiah who is chosen and anointed by God to be our deliverer?”
What the Jews expected was an Old Testament type of Messiah. They expected a Joshua, a Moses or someone similar to a type of Judge found in the book of Judges (Samson, Gideon, etc). What they desired was to be delivered from the Roman Occupation and they were looking for a leader to step up and lead the charge.
We see this in the reaction to Christ on Palm Sunday when the people waved the branches and shouted “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord” (Mark 11:9). But when Jesus failed to be the political insurrectionist that they desired, they turned and cried out “Crucify Him” (Mark 15:13-14).
When Pilate asks, “What sin did He commit?” He is unaware that the crime of Christ in the minds of the people is that He did not live up to their preconceived ideas regarding Christ as their deliver.
But even this aspect of the Life of Christ was prophesied.
Psalm 35:11 – Mark 14:57-58
Psalm 35:19, Psalm 69:4 – John 15:24-25
Psalm 22:7-8 – Luke 23:35
So that leaves the prophecies that remain to be fulfilled.
Jesus clarifies those for us on several occasions, but in one particular conversation where He is being questioned by the religious leaders and High Priests who ask Him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” (Mark 14:61).
Jesus response is priceless.
In English it simply looks like He says, “I am”, but an understanding of The Old Testament and Bible prophecy bring His response into a pretty cool context.
First, the word Jesus uses is the word, “Yahweh”. Yahweh is the word that God uses to describe Himself to Moses as the burning bush and is the word that was never allowed to be uttered out loud because it is considered to be the most Holy Name for God (Exodus 3:14).
So in essence, Jesus is saying…. Yes. Yes, I am. And in case you think that I am stuttering, I’m going to use the one word that will surely clarify it for you.
But then Jesus takes it to another level completely and goes on to say, “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven” (Mark 14:62).
This is a direct reference to Daniel 7:13-14 and the eternal Kingdom, Dominion and Authority of Christ as the lion, not the lamb. Basically, He is saying, to those “judging Him”… I’ll be back.
What is super cool is that He references Himself as the “Son of Man” over 80 times throughout the Gospels and this is not a reference to Himself as the son of Joseph, but as the Messiah who will return to fulfil the rest of the prophecies.
