Nigeria’s Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke has lost her chance to be the next Secretary General of the OPEC after tenure extension of the current Secretary General Abdalla S. El-Badri by six month yesterday.
The 165th Meeting of the Conference of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) convened in Vienna, Austria, yesterday, 11 June 2014 under the Chairmanship of its President, Omar Ali ElShakmak, Acting Minister of Oil & Gas of Libya and Head of its Delegation, decided to extend the tenure of Abdalla S. El-Badri as Secretary General for a period of six months from 1 January 2015.
The Nigerian government had pushed the name the country’s oil minister to be the next secretary-general of OPEC, people familiar with the matter said Tuesday, a move that could end a long-running leadership standoff at the organisation.
At the meeting Nigeria’s delegation at the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries has put Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke forward as a contender for the group’s top job, the move which considered being an exit strategy for the minister due to the high critics over the way and manners she manage the country’s oil sector.
Nigeria’s parliaments are currently having a running battle with the minister over several allegations of mismanagement of the oil wealth.
