Nigeria’s digital economy project will fail without the contribution of engineers, the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has said.

The society added that the role of the Nigerian engineers in a digital economy is paramount because everything involved in digitalization, from equipment to technical knowledge, is related to engineering.

A past Vice President of NSE, Engr. Joseph O. Akinteye, disclosed this in a keynote address he delivered at the 10th induction and public lecture for new corporate members of the NSE, Maitama, Abuja, branch, at the weekend.

Akinteye said because the NSE foresaw the importance of digital technology in Nigeria’s economy, the Nigerian Institute of Information Communication and Technology Engineers (NIICTE) was established in 2016.

He said the theme of the public lecture and induction; “The Role of the Nigerian Engineer in a Digital Economy: Opportunities and Challenges” is apt as the Buhari administration aims to achieve more economic growth through the digital economy sector.

According to him, with active participation of Nigerian engineers in the digital economy project, 70% broadband penetration target in the next four years will be achieved.

While calling for the development of new digital education curriculum to meet the present of students, he said the task of digital transformation of Nigeria is important and called on the new inductees to embrace the immense opportunities that are available for the engineer.
