Di’Ja is a Nigerian-Sierra Leonean artiste who got her start on the international music scene when she entered the music contest, ‘The Beat Music Awards’, hosted by The Beat 94.5 , and won a production deal with RockSTAR Music Corp in April 2010.
She has had studio collaborations with an award winning hit-making team of producers–Adam H., The BananaToons, and SA Trackworks (whose credits collectively include Jessica Simpson, The Corrs, Kelly Rowland, George Clinton, Elise Estrada, LiveOnArrival). The result of this was the hit, ‘Rock Steady’ which went on to win the 2008 BEAT Music Award for “Best New Artist” and get nominated for the Urban Award at the 2009 Canadian Radio Music Awards.
Di’Ja was raised in Nigeria and Sierra Leone and is proud that the influences of Fela Kuti are among the sources of her musical inspiration. Her other musical influences include Bob Marley, Marvin Gaye, Tracy Chapman, Diana Ross, Alicia Keyes, Beyonce, Madonna, Mary J Blige, and Tupac.
Born and raised in Kaduna, Nigeria, Di’ja’s sultry root blend have greatly influenced her upbringing, which has helped shape and mold the biochemistry and psychology graduate. Understanding early on that embodying both beauty and brains holds a heavier weight, Di’ja attained a double degree in Psychology and Biology before pursuing what she knew was her destiny—Entertainment.
She has had performances with the like of music mogul, Akon with whom she performed in Sierra Leone last year. Although she has shot to success in a short while Di’ja says, “I cannot tell you what the future holds, but I can tell you that with the help of the Almighty, nothing is impossible. “All I can say is 2011 has more than enough surprises.”
According to the fast rising artiste, “My music has done a lot for me in the last two years because it has allowed me express myself. I write as well and I am able to express myself a lot better. I’m able to tell a story to other people that you cannot really express sitting down one-on-one and other people can relate to it. I have always written poetry but never imagined I would be an artiste.”
