The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Union Bank, Mrs. Yetunde Oni has said the role of directors has shifted beyond just “custodians of financial success”.
She said they are now “architects of sustainable growth which translates to looking beyond profit.”
Oni spoke in her presentation at the February 2025 induction ceremony organised by the Chartered Institute of Directors (CIoD) held in Lagos.
Speaking on “Creating Value Beyond Profit: The Role of Directors in Driving Sustainable Organisational Growth,” the Union Bank chief also stressed the need for stakeholders’ engagement to create “meaningful relationships that drive mutual benefits.”
According to her, “Sustainable growth requires solid structures and policies that can stand the test of time.”
She noted that investment in continuous learning and corporate social responsibility activities are not expenses but seeds for sustainable growth.
She added that a Director must ensure “transparent governance practices” in line with best practice.
President and Chairman, Governing Council of CIoD, Alhaji Tijjani Borodo stated that in an era marked with shifting societal expectations, “the role of directors has never been more critical.”
Borodo told new members that the Governing Council of the Institute has approved that individual members of CIoD Nigeria can now register their organizations as corporate members of the CIoD Centre for Corporate Governance (IoDCCG).
