Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has reportedly completed plans to formally join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, November 3, 2025, in Yenagoa, the state capital.
A credible source at the APC secretariat in Abuja told the Weekend Trust in Abuja that preparations have been completed by the national leadership of the party to receive Governor Diri.
The governor’s decision to remain without a political platform for weeks had stirred controversy. They said this was probably the first time a sitting governor will continue to lead without being a member of any political party.
It was gathered that besides the governor, other notable members of PDP and their followers in Bayelsa will be received into the APC alongside the governor.
Governor Diri, now in the first year of his second term, resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on October 15, 2025. At the time of his exit, the governor did not announce where he was heading to.
He remained politically unattached, even as those monitoring political development predicted that indeed, he would join the APC.
“Governor Diri was supposed to join the APC the same day with his counterpart in Enugu State, Peter Mba.
“However, because of some strategic reasons, he was advised to tarry a while even though he has left the PDP.
“The gale of defection to our party is a clear indication that Nigerians are satisfied with what we are doing as a government. The governors are satisfied with what President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is doing.
“The economy is getting better as attested to by the World Bank…President Tinubu is working hard to deliver all the promises he made to Nigerians.
“Governors are also in tune with what is happening at the centre and this is why opposition governors are joining the APC,” he said.
Asked if they were not afraid of turning Nigeria into a one party state, the APC chieftain said not at all.
“But we need more members. We want to have more governors and more legislators to come to our party. Nigeria will not be a one party state simply because some governors are coming back to the APC. We have many examples where commissioners did not follow the governor to his new party.
“Our goal is to ensure that all the political office holders that join the APC deliver the dividends of democracy to the people,” he said.
