Female students of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) stay away from using toilet facilities in some hostels because they are dirty and the stench from them unbearable.
The sanitary facilities in Amina Hall were grossly inadequate considering the number of students, thereby compelling some of the students into urinating anywhere they could.
Ideally, there were two bathrooms and three toilets to 10 rooms but the number of students per room has increased to eight from four thereby overstretching sanitary facilities.
The toilets were also not used properly by students who litter them with tissue paper and the flush toilets are blocked making them unpleasant.
University authorities have recently renovated toilets in some of the hostels including Suleiman and Ribadu Halls.
There were concerns among female students in Amina Hall about the possible spread of toilet infections. Health of students living on campus is generally threatened by bad toilet conditions, the students lamented.
Students sent to Amina Hall now prefer to squat with their colleagues in other hostels or stay in rented apartments close to the campus.
