DisCo disconnects Plateau general hospitals

The Jos Electricity Distribution Company (Jos DisCo) has disconnected four government-owned general hospitals in Plateau State for failure to settle their bills. The hospitals are those in Dadin Kowa, Barkin Ladi, Mangu and Pankshin.

The hospitals were disconnected on Thursday last week for owing the DisCo three months.

Dr Friday Adakole Elijah, Head, Corporate Communication of the DisCo, confirmed the development, explaining that, “Some of the hospitals were disconnected for non-payment of the energy they have consumed in the past three months. All effort to make them pay proved abortive.

“We are not interested in disconnecting any customer. Disconnection usually comes as the last resort. This energy, you are supposed to pay for it. If customers don’t pay, we will also not have money to pay to those who supply us the energy.”

A source in Dadin Kowa told City News that health workers had resorted to the use of torchlight to perform hospital activities as there was no diesel to power the generator in the hospital.
