Shortly after the electricity distribution companies (Discos) started operations, the federal government mandated them to meter all consumers. But unfortunately, till date many Nigerians have yet to be metered. Despite all the directives from the government, they have yet to comply, leaving many Nigerians are their mercy.
Every month, the companies send estimated billings to consumers, whether they enjoy power or not. If indeed the country is serious about solving the electricity problem, it must compel the distribution companies to meter all Nigerians. It is only through that means that we can know the number of consumers, how much they pay and how much revenue is being generated from that sector.
When every consumer is metered, the issue of non-payment of electricity bills will be eradicated. I urge all stakeholders in the power sector to look into this matter and ensure that the distribution companies do what is expected of them.
