Striking doctors and health workers have returned to work after the Akwa Ibom State Government intervened over the invasion of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) by officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The peace meeting, brokered by Akwa Ibom State Governor Pastor Umo Eno in Uyo following an apology from the EFCC, was attended by the management of UUTH, representatives of the EFCC, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and other allied health unions.
Governor Eno, represented by the deputy governor, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, commended the EFCC chairman for ordering an investigation into the incident, as well as the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare for constituting a panel of inquiry.
He appreciated all parties involved for embracing dialogue and choosing the path of peace, but condemned the incident that led to the industrial action, noting that the strike caused avoidable hardship and loss of lives among innocent citizens seeking medical attention.
He said the government remained committed to the welfare of residents and would continue to sustain peace and stability in the state, adding that it would not stand by and watch people suffer, hence the intervention.
