Doma United and Sporting Lagos FC secured victories on the opening day of the Nigeria National League (NNL) Super 4, which began yesterday at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State.
In the first match of the Championship playoff, Sporting Lagos recorded a slim 1-0 victory against Rancher Bees while Doma United edged Inter Lagos by the same scoreline.
After the blast of the first whistle, Sporting Lagos took control of possession, creating a flurry of attempts, many of which were wasted.
However, the Lagos boys broke the deadlock when Alex Leme rose highest to head home in the 40th minute after a pinpoint cross from Seun Akanji into the box as Sporting went into the break with the lead.
On resumption, Bees made concerted efforts to equalise but the Lagos boys maintained their slim advantage till the final whistle.
Similarly, the second match of the opening day was equally entertaining as players of Doma United and Inter Lagos kept the fans cheering throughout the duration of the contest.
Yusuf Fantami was the hero for Doma United after he scored the only goal of the match in the 20th minute to hand the “Savannah Tigers” the crucial win.
In a post-match interview, the coach of Ranchers Bees, Ahmed Ahmad, attributed the loss to fatigue, saying his team arrived late on Saturday in Ogun from Kaduna.
He described Sporting Lagos as an experienced side, and confessed that his team is made up of mostly young and inexperienced players.
Coach Ahmad also expressed optimism ahead of his team’s next match against Inter Lagos on Wednesday.
In a related development, a former Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, commended the organisers of the league and expressed delight at the increase in number of private clubs.
