 Prof. Salihu Adamu-Dadari, a lecturer at the Department of Agronomy, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, has called for the establishment of more fertilizer blending plants to enhance food production in the country.

Adamu-Dadari made this call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Friday.

He said establishing fertilizer blending plants in the country would ensure massive production of the commodity to meet the needs of farmers.

According to him, more fertilizer blending plants across the country will not only reduce the high cost of the commodity but it will make it readily available for farmers to buy.

“The state governors in the north should emulate Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State, who established a fertilizer blending company for the production of the commodity.

“This will reduce the high cost of the commodity and make it readily available for sale to farmers,“ he said.

He noted that establishing the plants would also enable farmers, especially local ones to access the commodity easily.

“The measure will also check illegal activities of middlemen, who usually buy the commodity at cheaper rates and later resell it at exorbitant prices.

He said the Federal Government had taken a very good decision to salvage the economy through agriculture.

“This is a welcome development; there is the need for the State Governments to support the Federal Government’s efforts by establishing fertilizer blending plants in their states.

The university lecturer, who, lauded the Federal Government for introducing a number of policies aimed at supporting the agricultural sector, urged the government to sustain the tempo.

He also called on the Federal Government to come up with a good pricing policy in order to encourage more people to embrace the trade.

“We hope the government will come up with a good pricing policy to encourage more people to go into farming for the development of the country,” he added
