Soyinka gave the advice in Lagos yesterday at the 2015 edition of Vision of the Child (VOTC) with the theme: “The Road To Sambisa”. The VOTC is a yearly programme inaugurated in 2012, where young children are allowed to express themselves via literary presentations.
Addressing the gathering of young people and some elders, Soyinka said he had 60 reasons why Nigerians should not vote for the continuation of the Jonathan regime.
“I will not vote and I will not encourage anyone to vote for the continuation of this government, simply because your colleagues (children) numbering 200 were kidnapped”, he said.
According to him, the Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped on April 14 last year were sent on a mission to acquire education but ended up being kidnapped. He berated what he called “the unimpressive attitude of the Jonathan administration towards securing the release of abducted girls,” adding, “The government of this nation failed to show leadership. So, anyone who says after that event, that I will vote or cast my vote or encourage anyone to vote for this regime must be living in Sambisa forest. There has been a failure of leadership. Our children whom you represent today have been betrayed.”
Soyinka, who lamented that no appropriate action was taken to rescue the kidnapped girls, noted that it took the Jonathan government 10 days to even accept that the Chibok girls were missing.
