The Director, Centre for Islamic and Legal Studies of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Dr. Bala Babaji, has asked state and federal governments to pay more attention to children’s education and welfare.
He made the call at the 5th Model United Nations Conference jointly organised by Model United Nations of ABU and Coalition of Secondary Schools in Zaria.
Babaji who was represented by Barrister Abdullahi Aliyu, highlighted some of the children’s major rights to include right to life, survival and guidance by parents.
He called on government to ensure that Nigerian children are given necessary attention in terms of education and welfare.
The chairman of the occasion and Dean of Faculty of Social Sciences, Professor Kayode Omojuwa, explained that the Model United Nations is an academic simulation of the international relations, conflict resolution, peace and unity.
The vice chancellor of the university, Professor Ibrahim Garba, who was represented by the Dean, Students’ Affairs, Professor M.S. Shehu, advised the students to imbibe the culture of unity from their youthful age.
Also, a lecturer from the Department of Educational Psychology and Counseling, called on parents to show love and care to disabled children.
The event was made colourful with a mimic of the recent United Nations Security Council sitting on the situation in the Middle East.
Papers on ‘Child Right in Nigeria’ were also presented by some secondary school students.
