Shehu, who spoke while presenting a paper with theme “Islam and Modernity; the meeting and parting points of two contending world views” organised by the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT), Nigeria office, said lack of understanding of Islam was responsible for  extremism among some Muslims.
Shehu, who is also the Director, Institute of Continuing Education, Bayero University, said Muslims were allowed to take anything brought about by modernity which is not in conflict with Islamic ideology.
He said since Islam is proclaiming universality, it is unlikely that such religion would go against everything brought about by modernity.
