A Professor of French language at Osun State University, Osogbo, Professor Folorunso Abayomi Kizito, has advocated the need for parents to inculcate their indigenous languages in children to reduce the dominant influence of foreign languages over Nigeria’s indigenous languages.
He gave the advice while delivering the 8th in the series of inaugural lectures of UNIOSUN with the titled: “Linguistic Universal: French and Yoruba Languages as Linguistic Twin Sister.”
Professor Kizito, who lamented the lackadaisical attitude of Nigerians to their indigenous language expressed the fear that those languages will go into extinction if care is not taken.
The don recommended that the dominant language being spoken in the areas where a university is located in any part of the country should be made a compulsory GNS course for all students of that particular university.
Besides, he called for the establishment of indigenous language engineering centres in the higher institutions in the country as it is being done in UNIOSUN, adding that part of the preoccupations of these centres should include generation and formulation of the indigenous meta-languages especially those that would capture the modern technological terminologies.
He further emphasized the need for individuals to understand the language sof their immediate environment.
Kizito explained that proficiency in French language would be very useful for Nigerians.
He hinted that French language could be a veritable strategy to combat terrorism that the nation is tackling in the North East given the fact that most of the neighbouring countries speak French language.
