He said these plantsbased products were not properly regulated and have not passed through NAFDAC screening test, and therefore do not have its stamp and regulation number to attest to their genuineness and authenticity.

Akpan spoke at the weekend while delivering the 39th inaugural lecture of the university entitled ‘Phytomedicinals and Nutraceuticals in Health Affairs: the Biochemistry Perspectives’.
“Our people patronized these networks ignorantly. Most of these plant based products have not passed through NAFDAC screening test and therefore have no NAFDAC stamp and regulation number.
“It is pertinent to raise an alarm at this point because of the consequence of these products on our health,” he said.
He recommended the establishment of food and drug agencies in all the 36 states of the federation to ensure that the importation of these consumables into the country is properly scrutinized to conform with international standards.
He therefore advised that traditional healers should not be dismissed with a waves of hand but should be integrated into the health policy to ensure total health care delivery in the country.
