This was contained in a communiqué signed by the chairman and secretary of the conference communiqué committee, Professor Abubakar Mustapha and Dr Muhammad Babangida Muhammad, respectively after a two-day international conference at Bayero University, with the theme “Social Responsibility and Freedom of Expression from the Qur’anic Perspectives” according to the BUK official bulletin.
The communiqué said that texts of the Qur’an related to social responsibility and freedom of expression should be researched and contextualised by Muslim scholars with a view to promoting a comprehensive approach to social responsibility in Muslim societies.
It urged Muslim individuals and organizations to support and promote social responsibility and freedom of expression as essential religious duties and for the establishment of a peaceful, harmonious and egalitarian society.
The participants further appealed to Muslims, especially in the West, to design an effective programme of engagement with others, with a view to promoting a more tolerant perception and reporting of Islam and discouraging provocative denigration of its sacred figures.
The conference was organised by the Centre for Qur’anic Studies, Bayero University, in conjunction with the Hira magazine and Nusret Educational and Cultural Company of Turkey.
