A Youth leader, Charles Chidiebere has called on residents and political actors in Bende, Abia state to desist from engaging in any acts that may threaten public peace, particularly in light of recent political tensions surrounding a federal road project.

Speaking on the importance of peace and stability, Chidiebere emphasised that peace is not only a state of calm and security but also a fundamental requirement for protecting lives, property, and enabling meaningful economic development. He noted that no responsible government should tolerate actions that endanger public order, either directly or indirectly.

“It is deeply worrying,” he said, “that a subnational government appears to be turning a blind eye while certain individuals within its fold recklessly politicise development projects to the point of challenging the authority of the Federal Government. Such behaviour is not only irresponsible but ultimately unsustainable.”

Chidiebere cited the recent reconstruction of the long-neglected 9.6km Nkpa-Afor Umuda Road — a federal initiative facilitated by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu — as a notable achievement. The project included the Eme Bridge and erosion control features, and had remained untouched for over a century.

However, a section of the project near the bridge was found to be substandard. Upon discovery, Rt. Hon. Kalu ordered the contractor back to the site and initiated legal action against the supervising consultant, Architect Uzohu, who had prematurely certified the work.

Despite delays in accessing funding from the Ecological Fund Office, Rt. Hon. Kalu reportedly secured alternative resources to ensure the immediate rectification of the flawed portions. Work is currently ongoing in accordance with the original design.

Chidiebere criticised recent attempts by some groups to incite protests over the issue, labelling them as politically motivated and unnecessary.

“It is sheer bad politics and a direct affront on the Federal Government and the peace-loving people of Bende for any individual or group to stage disruptive protests when remedial work is already in progress,” he stated.

He further warned against using the situation as a political tool by what he described as a “labour-led government” and urged parents to prevent their children from being exploited by those seeking to destabilise the area.

“Bende has remained relatively secure amidst widespread unrest in the state. We are determined to preserve that peace. Any attempts to incite disorder will not be tolerated,” Chidiebere said, calling on security agencies to closely monitor the situation.
