Officials of the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) have shut some petrol stations in Birnin Kebbi for failing to comply with the N86.50k federal government approved pump price of petrol at the filling stattions.
During the price control operation led byAlhaji Muhammed Makira, the DPR Controller in charge of Kebbi, Zamra and Sokoto a petrol station, A. S Magare Ltd, along Birnin Kebbi/ Jega road was sealed when they discovered it was selling the product at N186 instead of the approved price.
Speaking to journalists the controller said “We are going round to enforce the price regime of N86. 50k as approved by federal government. We want to also ensure people are not cheated”
He added that some petrol stations in the state have been complying with the directive even though they are overcrowded by motorists who wanted to buy the product. “We monitor them to an extent and ensure they complied with the directive before we leave,” he said.
Makira said the stations that were shut would be made to pay N100,000 fine to the federal government for each of the pumps that are available at the petrol stations before they would be reopened.
“Whenever we come back to reopen them we will sell the product to public at government approved price,” the controller said.
He maintained that the federal government was moving towards making the product available by April 7 in every area of the country as promised by the Minister of Petroleum.
