The Dr Andrew Eigbedion sponsored 9-day Sports Festival amongst the Medical Students of the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma (AAUE) came to an end on Sunday.

A final Male Football match held between the combined 500 Level and combined 400 Level classes ending in a 3-1 victory for the 400 Level combined class.

There were over 300 Medical Students (from various Clinical classes) and Officials that gathered at the Main bowl Football Pitch of the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH), Irrua for the closing ceremony.

The Sports Festival witnessed other Sports including Chess, Scrabble, Volleyball, Ludo, Table Tennis, Female Football and FIFA Pro Indoor Game.

The MED 2019 (400 Level C) set emerged as the Female Football Champions after defeating the MED 2017 (400 Level A) set in the Finals in a penalty shootout.

Dr Andrew Eigbedion, a Consultant Paediatrician/Neonatologist at the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH) and also the Staff Adviser to the AAUMSA, expressed his gratitude to all those who contributed their monies, resources and time for making the Sports Festival a huge success.

He acknowledged the supportive roles played by the various officials including Dr Cyril Obasuyi, a Consultant Ophthalmologist at ISTH; Dr Bruno Arekhandia, a Consultant Neurosurgeon at ISTH; Dr Favour Otokhine, Assistant Secretary General of Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) ISTH, Dr Raymond Onyeka, Comrade Mathew Abulu of the Finance & Accounts Department of ISTH, amongst a host of other Staff of ISTH that participated in some of the events as Officials. He also expressed his thanks to the Director of Sports of AAUMSA, Comrade Oluwafemi Ebenezer for approaching him to sponsor the event and for coordinating the various Sporting activities.

Dr Abu Ibrahim Babatunde, an Alumnus of the College of Medicine, AAUE delivered the keynote address at the Closing ceremony. He acknowledged the unifying force of Sports. In his words, ‘Sports teaches resilience, team work, leadership and perseverance-values that are indispensable in our journey as Medical professionals”.

The President of the AAUMSA, Comrade Harrison Ibadin and the Speaker of the AAUMSA House of Congress, Comrade Adediran Adewale both expressed their gratitude to Dr Andrew Eigbedion for his vision and generosity in sponsoring the Sports Festival.

The closing ceremony witnessed the presentation of Medals to winning Teams and winners of individual events. Mr Godstime Akhabue of the MED 2017 (500 Level C) Clinical set emerged as the highest goal scorer in the Male Football Event with 5 goals. Mr Akhabue Godstime also emerged as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the Male Football Event. Other winners include Mr Iremiren Theophilus (Best Goalkeeper Male Football); Mr Umoru Destiny (Best Volleyball Player); Mr Omoruyi Daniel Osamudiamen (Best Coach Female Football); Miss Ayere Perpetual ( Female Revelation Player of the Tournament); Miss Okoh Nelly Odion-Highest Goal Scorer Female Football); Mr Usman Good luck (Highest Assist in Male Footage); Mr Arojie Vifa Isaac (Best Coach in Male Football); Mr Okoduwa Jude (Best Defender Male Football).

The Closing ceremony came to joyous ending with all and sundry present dancing with joy for a successful event.
