Dragons RFU wins Cresta Kwara Rugby 7s tourney

Twelve clubs, which included Kano (Barewa), Zaria, Plateau, Benue, Edo, Ife, Dragons, Racing, Police College and two teams from Kwara (Dynamite Rugby Club and Kwara Rugby Club) took part in the competition.

The tourney, which was sponsored by Ilorin-based Cresta Hotels, started with Dragons spanking Kano-based Barewa Rugby Club 21-7.

Kaduna Rugby team also fell to the superior fire power of Dragon, paving the way for the Lagos club to emerge as winner of Group D.

Ilorin Rugby Club toped their group by beating Edo Rugby Club and the team from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State.

But home support was not enough to prevent the Ilorin-based team from being beaten 21-5 in the semi finals by Dragon, which proceeded to the final against Racing Rugby.

The cup final was won by Dragons, who defeated Racing Rugby club of Lagos by 17 points to 7.

In the plate final, Barewa Rugby Club defeated Jos Rugby Club by 29 points to 5 to clinch the title.

Barewa also provided the Most Valuable Junior Player and the Player of the Tournament.

There were four groups of three teams each.

The three teams in the last group were Dragons, Barewa and Kaduna. This was the group of death as the group consisted of the three highly favoured teams.

Commenting on the event, Akin Akintola, the Nigerian Rugby Football Federation Chief Operating Officer and Tournament Organizer said, “the tournament was a resounding success and the level of rugby was of high standards.”

He stated that this was a very successful tournament, adding that they were impressed with the efficiency of the annual event.
