Drama as landlord removes tenant’s door over quit refusal

Residents of Sunday Adewusi Housing Estate, Dakwa, in Tafa LGA of Niger State were shocked during the weekend following a disagreement between a landlord and his tenant which led to the removal of the tenant’s door and burglary proof.

City & Crime learnt that Yakubu Abiodun, the tenant, had lived in the three-bedroom house with his family for over a year before the incident.

Narrating the incident, Mr Abiodun said trouble started in September last year when his first payment expired, and that he demanded the landlord to include some expenses he incurred in upgrading the house as part of the second year’s rent, which he claimed the landlord approved.

He said, “I then pleaded with him to give me time to enable me settle the outstanding balance, which is not up to 50 per cent of the total annual rent.

“He granted that in the first instance, only to change his mind thereafter, demanding me to quit the house.

“I was yet to get another place when he came and removed a door and burglary attached to the home and left with them.’’

But the landlord, Abubakar Garba, while responding, said the matter had since been settled following an intervention by co-residents in the estate, with the tenant signing an undertaking to leave the house on an agreed date.
