The Edo State Police Command has arrested a 42-year-old driver, identified as Osabohe Igereva, for the alleged murder of his girlfriend, 32-year-old Joy Jerome.

The suspect reportedly attacked the deceased on January 9, 2026, with pieces of wood following a heated argument.

He allegedly dumped her corpse by a riverside in the Ikpe community, Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of the state.

The command’s spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, stated that an investigation was initiated following a report by the Ohen (traditional head) of the Ikpe community regarding a lifeless female body found along a road near the river.

She said police operatives swiftly moved the woman to a hospital, where she was confirmed dead, adding her remains were subsequently deposited at the Stella Obasanjo Mortuary.

According to ASP Ikoedem, the investigation led to the arrest of the suspect, a mini-bus driver.

She said both the deceased and the suspect were residents of the Upper Sakponba area and were in a romantic relationship.

The spokesperson explained that on the night of January 9, at about 9pm, the suspect picked up the deceased, adding that on the way to his house, a violent argument ensued.

“The suspect accused her of cheating on him, claiming he had been unable to reach her for two days prior to the incident—an allegation she denied,” Ikoedem said. The PPRO further explained that in the heat of the moment, the suspect parked his vehicle, picked up a piece of wood, and beat the victim repeatedly across her body and neck.

“The deceased fainted, and when the suspect noticed she was no longer moving, he rushed her to a hospital, where she was confirmed dead on arrival,” the spokesperson added.

In a state of panic, the suspect allegedly drove to the Ikpe community and dumped the body near the river, where it was discovered the following day, the police added.

The police confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody and has confessed to the crime.
