A 57-year-old driver, Akintayo Wasiu, has been arrested by detectives of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly stealing his employer’s Toyota Hiace bus and altering its documents in an attempt to evade arrest.

The suspect was apprehended on May 24, 2026, at about 5.30am in Ibadan, Oyo State, following a coordinated intelligence-led operation by detectives who had been tracking his movements.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, who confirmed the arrest, said preliminary investigations revealed that Wasiu, employed as the driver of the vehicle, allegedly absconded with the bus and relocated to Ibadan after stealing it.

According to the police commissioner, investigators discovered that the suspect allegedly altered the vehicle’s registration documents and changed his telephone number in a bid to conceal the crime and avoid arrest.

“Following the report, detectives sustained surveillance and investigative efforts, which eventually led operatives to the suspect’s location, where he was found in possession of the stolen Toyota Hiace bus.

“During interrogation, Wasiu allegedly confessed to stealing the vehicle and admitted tampering with its documentation to make it difficult for authorities to trace.

“The stolen bus was recovered intact and has been taken into police custody as evidence,” he said.

CP Fatai added that investigations were ongoing to determine whether the suspect acted alone or had accomplices who assisted in altering the vehicle’s documents.

“The suspect will be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations,” he said.
