Operatives of the Edo State Police Command have arrested a 19-year-old driver, Nsikak Okon, after he allegedly ran over three police officers at a checkpoint in Benin City.
The suspect reportedly struck the officers with his unregistered black Mercedes-Benz GLK SUV along Iyekogba Road, near the Estate Gate, where the police had mounted a checkpoint.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Eno in a statement, said the reckless driver was traveling against traffic at the Iyekogba Estate Gate when he breached a police checkpoint barricade.
She added that the suspect then made a sudden turn and drove back toward the officers, knocking down three personnel who were on lawful duty.
He said the driver eventually crashed into multiple vehicles before being restrained and arrested.
According to her, the injured officers are currently receiving medical attention, adding that preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is an unlicensed driver.
Furthermore, the vehicle, which has been in use since May 2024, was found to be unregistered.
She said police had recovered the vehicle, valued at N28 million, along with a substance suspected to be “Canadian Loud” (a potent strain of cannabis) and a bottle containing a sky-blue liquid suspected to be diluted Refnol.
The Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, warned that attacks on police officers performing their lawful duties will no longer be tolerated.
