The police in Lagos have arrested a 40-year-old driver, Gabriel Ibitunde, for allegedly fiddling with the breasts of a teenage girl.
Ibitunde, who operates his bus in the Ketu area of the Lagos metropolis, was said to have committed the crime at New Garage, Ojota, Lagos.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Lucky Ihiehie, told the court yesterday that the accused committed the offence on October 22, 2017. Ihiehie said that the 15-year-old food seller was looking for small naira denominations when the accused indecently assaulted her from behind by fondling her breasts.
“She went to look for `change’ for a customer when the accused indecently assaulted her. She threatened to report the act to the chairman of the garage and the accused started beating her,” the prosecutor added.
It was gathered that the girl, names withheld, raised an alarm that led to the arrest of the suspect.
A witness at the garage, whose names the police didn’t disclose, was mentioned to have said that the suspect descended on the girl, almost beating her to a pulp.
“It was her persistent cry for help that attracted others to the scene. The driver was arrested and handed over to the union chairman,” the witness was quoted to have said.
The matter was later reported to the police at Ojota where Ibitunde was detained.
The case was later charged to court on the orders of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi.
Following the directive, the police yesterday charged Ibitunde, who has no fixed address, before an Ogudu magistrate’s court, Lagos, on a count charge of indecent assault.
The suspect was granted a N100,000 bail.
The magistrate, Mrs O. Sule-Amzat, ordered the driver to produce two sureties as a condition for the bail and adjourned the case until December 6, 2017 for mention.
