A motorist, Tijani Basit, was yesterday brought before an Abeokuta Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged reckless driving and causing the death of three people.

The 42-year-old Basit, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of causing the death of three persons and driving a vehicle on the highway without a licence.

The police prosecutor, ASP Sunday Eigbejiale, had told the court that the accused committed the offences on July 2 about 2.20pm at Alapako area on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Eigbejiale said the accused drove a Toyota Camry car in a dangerous manner and killed three pedestrians.

The driver, who was on a very high speed, lost control and hit the deceased – Onakomaiya Bukola, 49; Aderonke Sowande, 40; and Giwa Janet, 42 – on the pedestrians’ lane.

He also said the accused drove the car on the highway without a driver’s licence.

The motorist pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum N1 million with two sureties in like sum. The case was adjourned until Aug. 8. (NAN)
