A 37-year-old driver, Olarenwaju Abdulkarim, charged with stealing a car valued at N1.8million, was on Monday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

Abdulkarim, who resides at Agege, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

The defendant, however, denied committing the offences.

The Magistrate, Mrs S. K Matepo, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000, with two sureties in like sum.

Matepo said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

Earlier, the Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Innocent Odugbo, had told the court that the defendant committed the offences on March 31, at Orile-Agege, Lagos.

Odugbo said that the defendant conspired with others now at large to steal a Toyota Corrolla car belonging to one Mr Augustine Nwaokolo.

“The complainant gave his car to the defendant for Uber purpose, but after few weeks, he called to inform him that the car had been stolen.

“The defendant claimed that he parked the car in his compound and could not find the car where it was parked the following morning.

“The defendant conspired with other people to steal the car, because he refused to park the car in a secure place recommended by the complainant.

“The complainant reported the case and the defendant was arrested,’’ the prosecutor said.

The offences violate Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

According to Section 287, a person that steals risks three years imprisonment, while section 411 prescribes two years for conspiracy.

The magistrate adjourned the case until May 30, for mention. (NAN)
