A driver simply identified as Ayelabowo has been hospitalised after he drove a burning tanker out of Bovas filling station in Odo-Ota area, along airport road, Ilọrin on Wednesday.
City & Crime gathered that the fire occurred around 8am during the process of syphoning PMS into the filling station’s reservoir and took the firemen about one hour to extinguished.
Speaking on the incident, the spokesperson of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, said the victim had been taken to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), following a referral from a local facility.
Adekunle said, “After the fire started, the driver summoned courage to jump into the tanker and drove it out to avert a major disaster before we quenched the inferno. But his legs, laps and some part of his face got burnt in the process. He is writhing in pain”, Adekunle added.

He said the petrol tanker with registration number AGG 728 XK was carrying 45,000 litres of PMS.
Adekunle told our correspondent that the heroics of the driver and the dedication of the fire crew saved nearby buildings from the ravaging fire.
