Driver jailed 15 months for celebrating election victory with company’s vehicle

A Kano Magistrates’ Court sitting in No-man’s-land, has sentenced a trailer driver, Kabiru Shehu, to 15 months in prison for using a vehicle belonging to the company he is working with to celebrate the recent victory in the state gubernatorial election.

Shehu was dragged before the court presided over by Magistrate Ibrahim Mansur on a three-count charge bordering on playing with company’s properties and destroying wealth.

He was earlier accused of using the trailer of BUA Company to celebrate the election victory thereby destroying glasses and other parts valued at N700,000.

When the charges were read to him, he pleaded guilty.

The judge, Ibrahim Mansur, sentenced him to five months jail for each of the three offences.

He was however given an option of N100,000 fine.

He was also ordered to pay the sum of N700,000 for the repair of the vehicle he destroyed in the course of the celebration.
